For those that want to learn more about the history of Chile, you will find in Santiago some of the country's best museums including the Museo Chileno de Arte Pre-Columbian that contain impressive displays from many South American as well as Latin American civilizations from well before the Western world discovered these parts of the world. You will also enjoy Santiago for the hiking opportunities available near by in the mountains and Santiago as also its close environments have many splendid beaches that are especially worth visiting from December through February and March. Near to Santiago, you can also visit the many vineyards as also the hot springs and in fact Santiago itself is situated in a basin the lies between the Andes and the Coast Range. The center of the city is where most of the tourist attractions are located and you will surely hear the name Avanida Bernardo O'Higgins who was a nineteenth century hero of Chile who was a fighter that fought and won independence from Spain. You can also walk down the Avenue where you will come to the French style National Library where are stored many important exhibits of the works of solemn scholars. There are also many museums where you can get acquainted with the history of Chile as well as that of Santiago. The night life too is fast improving from what it was during the days of Augusto Pinochet and if you are fond of food then the Mercado Central or the Central Market is where you can eat the tasty Chilean food in accompaniment to local strolling musicians playing their music, and you will be able to savor the new and the old.
