The internet is something that had not been developed until the 90s to a large extent and it hasn't really boomed until after the turn of the century. In any case, the ultimate idea behind internet TV was the two-fold idea that not only should the internet be accessible on a person's television, but also that television could be watched through the internet on a person's computer. It is that two-pronged approach to internet TV that appealed to many people up to the point where it was made possible and available to millions of people around the world.

Importance
The importance of internet television in the world today is simply analogous to the importance of any type of television that allows you to go beyond the boundaries and do something totally different. In the case of the melding of the internet and television, it is simply the idea that you can now do both at once. Whether you are on your computer watching streaming video online or alternatively are using your big screen TV to surf the internet, the idea behind these things remains exactly the same. Television is ultimately something that will be around for awhile and making it possible to put that together with the internet is something that is very important indeed.

There are a number of different people that use internet TV today because in many cases you can actually use it for free. If you are going online through your internet connection and looking on sites like YouTube or Google Video, then you are definitely going to be doing that for free. However, if you want to rig an internet connection to your television for use in that way, then you are probably going to have to pay some extra money to get that done. Of course, if you want to get that done in that way, then the people that you are going to have things most in common with is the group of very technologically savvy people that end up using the internet TV a lot.

History
The history of internet TV starts with an internet that was already close to booming in the late 90s. That internet had started to get streaming video and once the streaming video got going, then television on the internet became a solid deal. The reverse of that, which is internet running through television, is not as old and nowhere near as old when it comes to how long it has been popularized.
