How to Teach a Dog Tricks

Do you own a dog and wish you could teach it a few tricks? There are millions of dog owners in the world and this number is growing daily. So many owners wish their dogs could do tricks like other peoples' pets can do. Training your dog can be beneficial in many ways. Not only will it allow you to be proud of them because of what they can do but it will keep them from getting too rough with others. A dog that is guided and trained is less likely to attack or harm someone. Millions of dogs are put to sleep every year due to bad or questionable behavior. It can be time consuming but well worth it if you have the patience to work with your dog daily. It is recommended to only attempt one trick at a time; start with the most simple tricks and move up from there.Make sure to always use the same word for each trick that you begin with and be consistent. Always remember to praise your dog when he succeeds.

Sit And Stay

Teaching your dog to sit and stay are probably the two easiest tricks that you can teach your dog. When you're ready to teach your dog to sit and stay, purchasing a variety of dog treats that he likes. Grab a handful and then grab your dog's attention. Once you have gotten his full attention lure him towards you by showing him the treats. Once he's closer raise the treats up into the air. Make your dog have to lean backwards and raise his head towards the treats. Once he's done this, REPEAT THE WORD "SIT!" Do not raise the treat so high that it seems out of reach for the dog. Once he is sitting on the floor, reward him with the treat and make sure to praise him for sitting! This shows your dog that you are proud of him and he's being rewarded for good behavior. Try repeating this a few times a day but keep it short and always use the word "sit".

Jumping

As most dogs enjoy running and jumping, it would be enjoyable as well as entertaining for you to teach him how to jump on command. Try placing a thin board across two chairs outside. Don't make it so high that he would not be able to jump over. Then place your dog on a leash and take him towards the board and use the command "JUMP!" Tug the leash lightly pulling him towards the board. Someone can stand on the other side with a treat which will give him an incentive to leap over the board. Once you have done this a few times take him off the leash and place him in front of the board and stand at his side. Again use the term "JUMP!" It will take him a few tries but eventually he will get it.

These are just a couple of tricks that you can teach your dog, but they are so many more that you can do. To find more of these resources, you can purchase books or look for information online.
