How to Fish for Trout

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just drop the line in the water and get a bite every time? This would make things a lot easier on us fishermen. There is only one problem with that, it will never happen. Since you're reading this I'm sure you've found that out by now. Below are a few things you may or may not have known.
  • Light Line - When fishing for trout you should never use anything larger then 6 pound line. It's been rumored that 4 pound line is what's best but 6 is still feasible. Lines over 6 pounds is overkill and will cost you bites. The fewer the bites, you guessed it the fewer the fish caught.
  • The Bottom is Best - The closer you can get your bait to the bottom the better. This is especially true when fishing in rivers or streams. Watch out though as your line can get snagged on the rocks, sea weed or other plants.
  • Live Worms - Live worms seem to be one of the best trout bait. No real secret here; everyone knows that fish love worms. What a lot of fishermen don't realize though that fishing with live worms can be 50% better then fishing with dead worms.
  • What's on Your Hands? - Believe it or not smells on your hands transfer onto the bait and the fish can actually smell it. If you have suntan lotion or perfume of some sort on your hands the fish will be less likely to bite. Trout have a very keen sense of smell, and if they suspect an unnatural smell they won't bite. It's good to rub your hands in the dirt or grass before fishing, or going out to fish for trout. This helps to get rid of unnatural odors.
  • Don't Give In - A common mistake is to switch spots every 5 minutes if you don't get a bite. Fishing for trout requires a lot of patience. I would wait at least 20 minutes before moving locations.

These tips may sound funny, but they work for a lot of fishermen. Everyone seems to spend lots of money for the best gear, but they overlook the simplest steps. Plus if you're reading this article then I think you will be willing to try anything. Next time you go out use these 4 rules and see how many bites you get. Remember fishing doesn't always have to be complicated.
