Characteristics
The horror movies that people look at nowadays are not really the same as the classic horror movies that used to be available years ago, but at the same time a number of characteristics are of course similar between the two. When you look at all of the different horror movies that people have usually watched, the idea of being able to scare a person watching the movie is usually the principle concern. And this is different between blood and gore movies, because blood and gore movies are violent in their methodology almost to the exclusion of all else. When you are expecting violence, it doesn't scare you and that is why the methodology of horror movies is selective violence in an attempt to scare the viewer.
Popularity Base
The popularity base of horror movies is actually difficult to identify as a specific group, but they usually tend to be Goth individuals that are younger in age and generally do not have much else to do in terms of either work or school. These horror movies might be all that they have in their life at the moment and that is why you see people going back to watch the same horror movie a dozen times before finally moving onto something else. Many other people do enjoy horror movies as well, but there are certainly a lot of small chunks within the larger group to make it futile to attempt to point down any other group as being nearly as large as the Goth following.
Example 1
The first classic example of a horror movie would probably be the Friday the 13th series of movies. There were a number of them created and as is the case with most series, the first of the set was the most classic of the whole thing. Friday the 13th is a class horror movie with a crazed lunatic going around and killing people off slowly and surely as time progressed. The point of the Friday the 13th movies are a number of different points when it is all laid down and looked at from the point of view of the creators, but nevertheless the elements of horror are all firmly in place.
Example 2
Another example would be the Scream movies that are far more recent than their Friday the 13th counterparts. With a killer going around and slowly murdering people one by one, it is easy to see why people might be totally afraid by any of the killing scenes in the movies.
