Characteristics

There are a number of characteristics that foreign movies have but at the same time it is very difficult to categorize and generalize foreign movies when it comes right down to it. The reason for that should be obvious, but basically it amounts to the fact that not all foreign movies come from the same place. Different foreign movies might come from countries thousands of miles apart and in any case these foreign movies are ones that people would be looking at from different points of view so it is very difficult to generalize foreign movies in that way. Most of them are not in English and that is about the only similarity that a lot of them have.

Popularity Base

The popularity base of foreign movies, just like the characteristics of foreign movies, is difficult to pin down exactly because foreign movies can be so different from each other depending on where they come from. Generally, people that are either immigrants from a certain country or alternatively born to immigrants from a certain country will enjoy at least some of the movies that come from their country of origin and beyond that there are of course a lot of Americans that are very much American many generations back that enjoy watching foreign films because of the way in which they act as a window to a different culture.

Example 1

A movie that was jointly made and produced by Indian and British cinema is the movie Lagaan. Lagaan means tax in Hindi and the Lagaan was something that the British occupiers demanded from the Indian indigenous people during the British occupation of India. It is a story about how a group of Indian farmers challenge their British overseers to a game of cricket in order to get the tax cancelled and about how they eventually win that cricket match on a stunning sixer hit off the last ball to be bowled. It is a great story for people to look at and a movie that actually garnered an academy award nomination for best foreign film.

Example 2

Amelie is a movie that people might remember from a few years ago and a movie that was produced in France. You can see that the movie itself has a lot more given to description and character development than most Hollywood movies and it is differences like these that enthrall the audience for long periods of time. The differences that show windows to the different cultures of the world.
