Female Impotence - What You Should Know

Although male impotence, has been known and studied for sometime now, it was only a few years ago that attention has been given to female impotence. That is rather ironic considering that impotence, or using the medically correct term, sexual dysfunction is more common among women. Recent studies show that one out of three women report a lack of interest in sex and one in four women say they are unable to achieve orgasm.

Sexual dysfunction in women can be divided into different categories. Although the labeling of various female sexual dysfunctions has been an ongoing debate for sexologists, this article will focus only on the following dysfunctions: female sexual arousal disorder, female orgasmic disorder and vaginismus.

Before giving a description of the dysfunctions mentioned above, let us look first into the classification of dysfunction itself. Life long dysfunctions are dysfunctions that have always been present. Acquired dysfunctions are those that come only at a certain point in life. Prior to the acquisition, the person was able to function without dysfunction. Situational dysfunctions occur only at certain situations; and generalized dysfunctions occur regardless of the situation.

Now let's look at how these dysfunctions are described. Female Sexual Arousal Disorder or FSAD is the inhibition of the general arousal aspect of sexual response. A person who has FSAD does not lubricate, and there is no expansion of vagina or formation of orgasmic platform. Her erotic senses are dulled and may even be revolted at the thought of physical contact. Sometimes, women who have FSAD enjoy sex only up to a certain point. FSAD fits into all the classifications of dysfunctions.

Female Orgasmic Disorder on the other hand impairs the orgasmic component of the female sexual response. In contrast to FSAD, a woman who has this disorder may be very sexually aroused but never reach orgasm. This also fits into all the classifications of dysfunctions.

Vaginismus affects the ability of a woman to engage in any form of vaginal penetration. This includes sexual penetration, insertion of tampons and even gynecologic penetration. This is a result of a recurrent or persistent involuntary reflex of the outer third of the vagina. The reflex causes the muscles in the vagina to tense suddenly making any vaginal penetration painful or impossible.

Although Inhibited Sexual Desire is strictly speaking not a dysfunction, it is nevertheless a sexual difficulty. The causes of this are chronic physical disease, as well as hormone deficiencies, depression, stress, alcoholism, and kidney failure. Sometimes, the consequences of certain life events affect some people psychologically, also causing Inhibited Sexual Desire.
