Characteristics
The documentary movies that are available around nowadays have a number of different characteristics to them and it is important to take a look at these characteristics from the point of view of them being the defining points of a documentary. Firstly, documentaries are movies that are about real life events and occurrences, but at the same time are not presented as a dramatization. The idea behind the dramatizations is that they are movies created based on the different types of true stories available in the world today, but a documentary is actually going around and examining the different issues that people have with different things.
Popularity Base
The popularity base for a documentary is largely dependant on what the documentary actually is. Different people will go see different documentaries and depending on what the different documentaries are, different people will like or dislike them. Political documentaries tend to be the ones that bring on the most extreme in terms of like and dislike and after political documentaries, other documentaries tend to be less popular because they don't speak to people's emotions as much for the most part as the different political documentaries do.
Example 1
A very classic example of a documentary that was very political and inspired both like and dislike from both ends of the spectrum was the documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, made and produced by Michael Moore. Michael Moore is a well noted activist when it comes to a left wing political ideology and therefore his documentaries take that point of view. This tends to make people that are left leaning in their political ideology enjoy his work and people that are right leaning in their political ideology dislike it. Some of his works are perhaps not the best example of typical documentaries, but is definitely a good example of a political documentary.
Example 2
A documentary that is perhaps a much better example of what a typical documentary would be is the documentary that National Geographic released awhile back on the White Tigers of the world. This is something with a steady and informative narration backed up by visuals that are dually intended to impart some specific wisdom onto the people that specifically watch the documentary. National Geographic of course comes out with a large number of these documentaries every year and they are perhaps the most informative group of documentaries around. Many people continue to enjoy watching them.
