Birth Control that Doesn't have to be Taken Daily

The Pill was at one time considered a breakthrough in contraceptives, but now-a-days many women feel burdened by having to remember to take the Pill daily. Here are some options that are just as effective and a lot easier on your memory!

NuvaRing
The same hormones that you would find in the Pill are released into your vagina after inserting the flexible two-inch NuvaRing. The only difference being that the amount of hormones released is a lower amount in comparison to the pill. When used properly, the NuvaRing is 99% effective. Some other perks? Lighter, shorter periods and only having to think about it twice a month (when you put it in and 3 weeks later when you remove it). Insertion is as easy as inserting a tampon and doesn't even require exact positioning. In most cases the ring cannot be felt, even during intercourse.

Mirena IUD
This intrauterine device, which measures 1¼ inches long and is T-shaped, is inserted by a gynecologist through your cervix and into the uterus. Once in the uterus small amounts of progestin are released. Progestin is a synthetic form of progesterone that prevents pregnancy by blocking ovulation. This method has been found to be 99.9% effective for up to five years. Other perks? Lighter, shorter, less painful periods, and 20% of women have been found to completely stop menstruating after about a year with the device.

Implanon
This matchstick sized rod is implanted into the inside of your upper arm just below your skin. It takes about three minutes for implantation and not much longer for removal. Implanon is 99% effective for about three years. The rod uses progestin in low steady doses to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation. Perks of this method? It doesn't contain estrogen so it is safe to use while breastfeeding and there is a lower risk of blood clots than the Pill. On the downside, the rod may cause breakthrough bleeding during the first 6 or 9 months of use.

Depo-subQ Provera 104
This is the newest version of Depo-Provera. It is an injection of progestin that is over 99% effective for three months. The differences of the new version compared to the older one are that the injection is inserted just below the skin instead of being inserted into muscle, meaning it hurts less. It also releases lower doses of progestin, which could mean fewer side effects (such as weight gain and loss of bone density). The downside is that once you stop injections, it may take as long as 10 months for ovulation to begin again, which is something to think about if you're planning on becoming pregnant in the future.
